President’s Message
Nationally, economic news continues to be erratic; however, in southeast Louisiana the economy shows signs of improvement. Consider the NALP research report comparing law firm jobs in twenty U.S. cities. Of twenty cities profiled including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, only three saw growth in entry-level attorney positions at law firms between 2009 and 2010 – one of which was New Orleans. The growth in New Orleans private firm entry level attorney positions was 2.3%. Many profiled cities experienced a double-digit decline. The cities with the greatest decline were Boston (-26.1%), Dallas (-26.3%), and Denver (-26.4%).Compared to the dramatic decline of entry-level opportunities in other cities, New Orleans appears to be in a terrific position to capitalize on a rebounding economy. Our local economy has not suffered as much as others; therefore, it should be easier for it to recover and grow. Through NOLRA we can position our organizations to be at the forefront of the local legal industry during the recovery. Because of our professional roles we each have a hand to play in the New Orleans economy and job market specifically.

NOLRA strengthens the legal community in southeast Louisiana because participants, both legal recruiting and career services professionals, leave meetings having gained shared insights, new ideas, and fresh perspectives. A common theme articulated by the organization’s participants is, “being active in NOLRA makes me better at what I do.” As local legal employers strengthen their recruiting programs and law schools better prepare law student and alumni candidates we raise the bar for the profession as a whole.

This year there are two additional opportunities to participate in NOLRA events. On Friday, November 3rd we will convene at noon for a roundtable review of issues surrounding the fall recruiting season. In December, we will mingle at the annual holiday reception to celebrate another year of advancements made by NOLRA as well as accomplishments each of us has achieved within our respective organizations. I look forward to seeing you at both.

Amy Schwarzenbach
2011 President

Lady Justice Strutting Funky to Celebrate The Pro Bono Project’s 25th Anniversary at the 2011 Justice For All Ball on November 4th

(New Orleans, LA) – Lady Justice, along with New Orleans’ own Jon Cleary’s Philthy Phew are strutting funky to celebrate The Pro Bono Project’s 25th Anniversary in style at the organization’s 23rd Annual 2011 Justice For All Ball (JFAB).

Honorary Co-Chairs Larry and Marian Gibbs will preside over the black-tie (optional), fundraising event on Friday, November 4, 2011, beginning at 8:00 pm. This year’s JFAB will be held at the Audubon Tea Room, adjacent to the Audubon Zoological Garden on Magazine Street; a private patron party will be held preceding the Ball. Tickets are $150 in advance, $175 at the door, young attorneys, $100 advance/$125 at the door and students $75 advance/$100 ; raffle tickets are $5 each. Ticket packages and corporate sponsorships are also available. All proceeds from corporates sponsorships, ticket sales, the raffle, the live and silent auction will benefit The Pro Bono Project. To purchase advance tickets online: or call the JFAB Hotline at:504.581.3480.

The Justice For All Ball serves as one avenue through which The Project raises funds to enable people to rebuild their lives and this community. So often, many of The Project’s clients don’t have the resources, or even understand that the problem they have requires a legal solution. That’s where The Project makes a difference by matching private bar attorneys pro bono with clients in need. Without The Project, so many of the legal issues that continue to impede the return of citizens and the rebuilding of the metro area will continue to be unresolved.

This year’s JFAB will feature Jon Cleary’s Philthy Phew entertaining patrons with a combination of New Orleans funk, classic R&B and tropical rhythms to keep then hopping all night long ( Food and beverages will be provided by more than 20 area restaurants, as well
as the Audubon Tea Room. Raffle items from the area’s retail and service businesses, along with a special art and travel silent and live auction will provide patrons with other ways to financially support The Project. Artist Garland Robinette is creating this year’s invitation art. His original artwork will be the centerpiece of the live auction ( Attorney and Gambit publisher,
Clancy Dubos will be wielding the auctioneer’s gavel this year for the live auction. “As Honorary Chairs, Larry And Marian Gibbs will lead the way for Lady Justice to engage not only the legal community, but also the many businesses and individuals who can get involved to support what The Project does. We are so honored to have Larry and Marian join us as Honorary Co-Chairs this year. They bring a wealth of experience to The Project in this role,” says Chris Ralston, 2011 JFAB Committee Chair for The Project.
